Lectionary for Ya'akov

Light of the World by William Holman Hunt, circa 1900-1904, St Paul's Cathedral . This is for John 1:4-9. This series of 3 paintings by Hunt was immensely popular in the early 20th century and many derivatives (stained glass and engravings in particular) were made. Lux in Tenebris by Evelyn De Morgan, 1895, De Morgan Collection . Evelyn De Morgan is one of my favorite painters. The woman is a personification of good and light that is overcoming the darkness and evil (crocodiles and possibly a Komodo dragon). Annunciazione - The Annunciation by Fra Angelico, 1439-1443, Basilica di San Marco . An angel with wings that aren't white! They remind me of marbled paper. The wings on this angel remind me of a swallowtail butterfly and the brocade on the angel's robe is beautiful. Fra Angelico painted many versions of the annunciation. A timid, contemplative Mary and an angel without wings but hovering with fiery feet and with a scandalous sliver of bare skin on the sides of the robe and a limited color palette was not the expected version of the annunciation .
